The Verge and Hot Pod, the preeminent audio industry newsletter, are seeking a writer to cover the audio space and the broader creator economy.

As our Hot Pod writer, you’ll focus on putting together at least one newsletter per week, which will include a news roundup, scoops, and analysis. We want to keep our readers ahead of the changes in the industry — what companies are springing up, who’s winning the battle for people’s attention, and where is all this audio hype headed? It’ll be up to you to guide them — to filter the signal from the noise.

A great Hot Pod writer will have a sense for not only the pure business stories and the news that matters, but how they affect the livelihoods of the people who work in the industry, whether that be corporate executives, on-air hosts, or indie podcasters. The beat is growing alongside the audio space, so the right writer will be a self-starter who cares about audio and chronicling the industry’s trajectory, but also finds ways to go deeper on the headlines. What are the readers missing or what should they be thinking about? If you can bring in scoops or exclusives, all the better!

This role will be part of The Verge’s creators team. You’ll be expected to write posts daily and file one newsletter per week while also reporting for the weeks ahead. A typical day would likely involve calling sources, researching stories, and uncovering stories Hot Pod readers haven’t read yet. You’ll also be called upon to assist the creators team on broader news, as well.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assembling one Hot Pod Insider edition per week
  • Supporting Hot Pod through background research and newsgathering
  • Collaborating with our editorial, engagement, and marketing teams on growth strategies for Hot Pod
  • Embedding in the podcast industry to find stories and scoops
  • Working with the Creators desk to write news and reports daily
  • Proactively pitch reports and analysis
  • Help us maintain our collaborative and ambitious team culture

Qualifications:

  • A self-starter attitude with a hunger to find stories
  • Strong writing skills, including the ability to identify compelling angles and develop them effectively
  • An interest in audio helps, but isn’t necessary, so long as the beat is something you’re wanting to explore

This role is a part of the Vox Media Union, represented by the Writers Guild of America, East
