July Member of the Month: Colleen Capola, Senior Producer, Leo Burnett

Describe your career journey. Wow, such a wild one. I was initially working for a print broker out of college and was laid off a month and half later as he closed his doors. Whoops. I ended up doing office work at a Chicago Law Firm – Corboy & Demetrio during that summer and they kept me on as an office assistant while I looked for jobs in my field. I then began working at a small design studio that primarily handled labels and packaging for Kraft – proofreader, runner, etc… you name it – I did it! From there I was off the commercial side of printing with Madden Communications. A family-owned business that really taught me a lot of the print side of things. It was after 4 years there that I turned my eye to the agency side of things and landed a job at Frankel where I met so many life-long friends. A creative promotional agency that was booming. After a few years there and realizing that I could be doing so much more, an opportunity opened at Leo Burnett. I recall almost applying for a job back when I was a senior in college and my career coach told me “it’s not enough money’, so I never applied. But this was my chance and I’ve been at it ever since. From a production service rep at a printer to producing everything now from print, radio, digital, broadcast, experiential. The list goes on and on!
Which three words would you use to describe your personality? Honest, Hardworking, scrappy when I need to be!
Name a woman who inspires you and why. Trick question – you know why? Because it’s not just one woman, it’s a whole village. My Mom – everything she taught me growing up in terms of work ethic, morals, kindness. Teachers, previous female bosses, mentors, coworkers, etc…. It’s the combination of all the woman I’ve admired throughout my life that have helped me become the woman I am today and continue to be.
How long have you been a She Runs It Member? Verrrry long!! Our partnership has been for quite a few years
What committees/programs are you involved in with She Runs It? I’m currently a board member of WomanKind at LeoBurnett. I, along with a few other board members are liaisons between SRI and Leo Burnett in terms of education, networking, events, etc…we always look forward to partnering with SRI. I’m also an Ambassador as well – great things happening at SRI!
What advice would you give to fellow new members in making the most of their membership? Try to take advantage of every event you can possibly attend or dial into virtually. Even if the topic might not be on your “list” of interests, you never ever know if something may peak your interest and give you a new perspective on work, personal life, worklife balance, networking, etc….You just never know.
What do the words “She Runs It” mean to you? It’s all about you – your decisions in your life for your own future and destiny. YOU make things happen, YOU run it!
